DeLille Cellars Celebrates 100 Years of Harrison Hill Vineyard
Acclaimed Washington State Winery Continues to Release Its Ageworthy Bordeaux and Rhone Style Wines
WOODINVILLE, Wash., Nov. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — DeLille Cellars celebrated 100 years of Harrison Hill vineyard in the Snipes Mountain AVA with a visit to the vineyard and a 10 year Harrison Hill retrospective wine tasting. Steve Newhouse, 3rd generation vineyard owner, and his son Todd Newhouse, vineyard manager, discussed the rich and somewhat unpredictable history of the 5-acre vineyard that they have farmed for DeLille Cellars for over 20 years, tending vines planted for wine grapes back in 1962. Guests enjoyed Harrison Hill wines including the 1999 as well as the 2003-2011 vintages. This celebration came as the winery plans to release the latest vintages of several of its signature Bordeaux and Rhone style wines. DeLille Cellars 2012 D2, DeLille Cellars 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Four Flags, Doyenne 2012 Aix and Doyenne 2012 Signature Syrah will all be available as of November 15th.
“At DeLille, we believe terroir is a special thing. To have terroir, you have to stand out. We often call it ‘somewhereness’ which many of our wines tend to have,” remarked Chris Upchurch, Executive Winemaker and Cofounder of DeLille. “Since 1992, our mission at DeLille has always been and continues to be to create special wines from the distinctively expressive land and dramatic warm and dry weather conditions in the grape growing region of the Pacific Northwest.” Upchurch continued, “In the case of Harrison Hill, we are fortunate to have some of the oldest vines in the state. Grapes have been growing in Snipes Mountain AVA for 100 years, and Cabernet grapes have been at Harrison Hill for over 50. I love old vines, they’re like old people. They don’t produce too much and they don’t move too fast, but in terms of wine, the yields are lower, they mature and ripen slower, which means the flavors catch up before the sugars get too high.”
“All of our wines represent our commitment to innovative vineyard selection and management,” continued Greg Lill, DeLille Cellars President/CEO and Cofounder. “From the beginning, we’ve looked towards the prestigious Red Mountain AVA as the foundation of our wines, using grapes from our own vineyards in combination with fruit from other top sites on Snipes Mountain and in the Yakima Valley. We are all exceptionally proud of the reputation our wines have earned. Harrison Hill has become one of the most sought after Bordeaux blends in the state. Chris and the winemaking team continue to experiment. It’s our focus on tradition as well as innovation that inspires us all.”
“With all these aspects of terroir, complexity, ripeness, we make sure we never forget about delicious,” concluded Upchurch.

DeLille Cellars is a boutique artisan winery located in Woodinville, Washington. Under celebrated winemaker Chris Upchurch, DeLille Cellars was the first winery in Washington State to focus on creating Bordeaux style wine blends. From the beginning, the winery has looked towards the prestigious Red Mountain AVA as the foundation of its wines, using grapes from its own vineyards in combination with fruit from other top sites in the Yakima Valley. DeLille produces six Bordeaux-styled wines: Grand Ciel, Chaleur Estate Rouge, D2, Harrison Hill, Four Flags and Chaleur Estate Blanc. The winery also produces the Doyenne wines which include classic northern Rhone Syrah – awarded as one of the great 15 Syrahs of the world; the Grand Ciel Syrah from their own Estate vineyard, a Roussanne; Métier, as Southern Rhone-style red wine; Aix, a Provence-style red wine and a Bandol-style Rosé. Robert Parker Jr. of the Wine Advocate rated DeLille Cellars and Doyenne as two of the top 12 Washington producers, bestowing the title of the “Lafite Rothschild” of Washington State. DeLille Cellars has a traditional “chai” chateau winery located on the 10 acre Lill Family Estate which overlooks the Woodinville valley floor below as well as its Carriage House tasting room.
